Wrist pain from pull-ups
Which side of the wrist?
A straight bar asks the hand and forearm to stay in a fixed position while supporting bodyweight. “Wrist pain” is still too broad: thumb side, pinky side, palm side, back, or deep in the center are distinct locations.

Radial edge
Note whether the sensation is at the wrist crease, the base of the thumb, or slightly up the forearm.
Pinky side
Ulnar edge
Record whether it feels superficial, deep in the joint, or extends toward the little finger.

Include any tingling, numbness, or altered grip in the hand or fingers.
Back
Knuckle side of the wrist
Note whether it appears while hanging, only while pulling, or when the hand opens afterward.
Center
Deep, clicking, or hard to locate
Record catching, locking, visible swelling, and any change in the ability to hold the bar.

Would chin-ups or another grip change it?
Possibly, but “feels different” does not mean “fixes the problem.” The variations below change position and load-sharing. None can diagnose pain, and none is universally safer.
Pull-up
Palms away
The forearms stay pronated on a straight bar. Grip width can range from narrow to wide, adding another variable.
Chin-up
Palms toward you
The forearms stay supinated. This changes elbow-flexor and shoulder loading; it is not simply an easier pull-up.
Neutral grip
Palms face each other
The hands sit between the pull-up and chin-up positions. Overall muscle activation was broadly similar across grips in one small study.
Rings or rotating handles
Hands can turn
The forearms are not locked to one angle. More freedom of movement is a difference, not evidence that the variation treats pain.
A straight bar fixes the hands in one orientation; neutral or rotating handles allow a different wrist and forearm position. That mechanical difference is real, but it does not establish which variation is appropriate for a painful wrist.
Grip evidence: pull-up variation EMG study and shoulder-loading study. Both used small groups of healthy, mostly male participants, not people seeking care for pain.
Does a chin-up help wrist pain?
A chin-up changes the fixed forearm and wrist orientation; it does not remove the need to grip and support bodyweight. Neutral or rotating handles change the orientation again. No one of those options can be described as the general solution for a painful wrist.
The useful comparison is descriptive: exact side, exact grip, exact point in the repetition, and whether strength or sensation in the hand changes.

Warning signs
Get prompt medical assessment rather than using a web page to interpret pain if any of these apply to the wrist or hand:
- Severe or sudden pain, especially after a fall, collision, or other injury.
- A snap or pop followed by marked pain, bruising, swelling, or loss of strength.
- An obvious change in shape or color, or an inability to move the arm, wrist, hand, or fingers normally.
- Numbness, persistent pins and needles, loss of feeling, or sudden weakness.
- Heat, redness, or major swelling, particularly with fever or feeling unwell.
