Method, without mystique
The plan is a bounded feedback loop.
It does not “know” your physiology. It makes a conservative first estimate, observes the work you report, and adjusts within guardrails.
1. Start below failure
Your first prescription uses your current clean-set maximum, available days, equipment, and bodyweight. Working sets usually keep roughly two good repetitions in reserve. Beginners use assisted repetitions, controlled negatives, and active hangs.
What counts as a strict repetition?
Begin from a controlled hang with straight elbows, pull without kicking or kipping, bring the chin clearly above the bar, and return under control. End the set when the next repetition would change that standard. Consistency matters more than arguing over one universal style.
2. Measure response, not motivation
After the session, you log completed reps, perceived difficulty, the limiting factor, concerning discomfort, current bodyweight, and the best clean set you performed. Those inputs affect two stored values: a dose factor for upcoming work and a pace factor for the forecast.
3. Make small corrections
- Full completion that feels easy nudges dose and pace upward.
- Incomplete or excessively hard work trims the next dose.
- Discomfort causes a larger reduction and extra recovery time.
- A meaningful bodyweight change is included conservatively because pull-ups move body mass.
- All adjustments are capped; a single exuberant or terrible day cannot make the plan jump wildly.
The forecast is always a range and can move. Goals are directions, not guarantees.
Why strength work can include load
For trainees with a base of strict repetitions, light weighted pull-ups can provide a lower-repetition strength stimulus. The plan still includes bodyweight practice because that is the skill being measured. Eight strict repetitions is our conservative product threshold, not a research-established universal cutoff. Evidence used for the starting rules
The cold-start rules are an original, conservative synthesis. Relevant evidence includes research on velocity and effort in the pull-up, a systematic review of resistance-training loads, and a trial showing that progressing repetitions can also produce adaptation. None supplies a perfect individual forecast; that is why we label the result as an estimate and update it from logged outcomes.
